Accessibility at the Indianapolis Zoo

Our values reflect that we welcome everyone and actively foster an environment of inclusion and understanding. We strive to make our facility and experiences welcoming and accessible for all our visitors.

We encourage individuals and groups with diverse needs to reach out to us before your visit so we can help you prepare for the best experience. See below for specific information about accommodations for individuals with sensory processing needs or differing physical needs, who are deaf or hard of hearing, who are blind or have low vision, or who are caring for others with physical or sensory needs.

If you require an accommodation that is not addressed below, please contact us so we can work to support your specific needs. Note that we will contact you within two business days of your request.

While you are at the Indianapolis Zoo, if you have any questions, concerns or needs, please see any Zoo team member or call 317-630-2001.

2025 Special events

Sensory Inclusive Days

As a continuation of our commitment to be a Zoo for all, the Indianapolis Zoo is excited to expand our sensory-inclusive days to all our special events this year.  On two days of each of our special events, xZooberance, Zoo Boo, and Christmas at the Zoo, the event will be modified to be sensory-inclusive with alterations to sound, smell and lighting.

In addition, on these sensory-inclusive days, the Zoo will be offering a calming room in the Hix Institute across from Oceans for individuals that may require a quiet space for self-regulation.

As with every other day, KultureCity sensory bags and lap pads will be available to borrow for this event at no charge.  Please visit the KultureCity section of our accessibility page for details.

xZooberance : Sundays, April 6th and 13th, 12-4 pm

Zoo Boo:  Wednesdays, October 15th and 29th, 2-7 pm

Christmas at the Zoo: Wednesdays, December 3rd and 17th, 4-9 pm

Accessibility Services

Emergency and Security Services

Members of the Zoo’s Security staff are trained as first responders for emergency situations. Should you have an emergency while on Zoo grounds, please go to the Visitor Services Center near the front entry gate or the First Aid Station located near the Carousel, or ask any Zoo staff member for help.

In case of dangerous weather, many of the Zoo’s buildings are designated shelter areas. If you are unable to transport to one of these locations, reach out to any Zoo team member or call Zoo Security at 317-630-2085 for assistance.

  • Lap pads: Weighted lap pads are free to borrow at both the Dolphin Presentation and the White River Junction Train. Just ask a Zoo team member for one when you arrive at one of these experiences.
  • Zoo signage and map: Keep an eye out for suggested Headphone Zones, which can be loud, as well as Quiet Zones and Smell Zones throughout your visit.

Before your visit, check out our social story about a visit to the Indianapolis Zoo on the KultureCity website or app to best prepare you and your group for your visit to the Zoo.
