Celebrate the winter season by sponsoring one of our Gentoo penguins! Native to the subantarctic islands, these flightless birds are well-adapted for the cold. Like most penguins, they store a lot of fat in their body to keep warm, as well as a thick layer of insulating feathers. Gentoo penguins can reach a length of 70 to 90 cm (28 to 35 in) making them the third-largest species of penguin. Male and female Gentoo penguins typically mate for life and raise offspring together without picking other mates.
Like all animals at the Indianapolis Zoo, our Gentoo penguins are ambassadors for their counterparts in the wild. While they are listed as a species of least concern in the wild, some of their populations are threatened by pollution, hunting, and human recreational activities. Through the Animal Amigo program, you support the care of our Gentoo penguins here at the Zoo and support the Indianapolis Zoo’s global conservation efforts.
For a donation of $50 or more, you’ll receive an Animal Amigo package which includes one penguin plush, photo, certificate, trading card and recognition on the Animal Amigo donor board.*
Gifts and Groups: Animal Amigo donations make great gifts. You can purchase one as an individual or as a group.
