Back to School: Sustainable Practices

As the school year approaches, it is the perfect time to bring sustainable habits into our daily routines. Shopping for sustainable school supplies can be a small way we can significantly impact the environment and help save species.

When shopping for school supplies, opt for products made from recycled or renewable materials, such as notebooks, binders and pencils. Also, buy bulk supplies to minimize packaging waste and save resources. With today’s technology, parents can consider going digital for schoolbooks and study tools instead of buying physical copies of textbooks. Packing a waste-free lunch can be another easy way to reduce plastic and trash. Purchase reusable containers, water bottles and beeswax wraps instead of disposable plastic bags or single-use, plastic water bottles. When possible, use locally sourced ingredients to support local farmers and reduce the environmental impact.

Another way to think about sustainability this school season is to support conservation initiatives in your community. You can find more about what the Indianapolis Zoo does to support conservation all around the world here
