The Indianapolis Prize, the world’s leading award for animal conservation, has named Mwezi “Badru” Mugerwa the Winner of the 2025 Indianapolis Prize Emerging Conservationist Award.

The Indianapolis Prize has named six distinguished conservationists as DeHaan Finalists for the 2025 award. The biennial award recognizes animal conservationists who have achieved major victories in saving an animal species or group of species.

Indianapolis Prize officials announced 44 leaders in animal conservation as Nominees for the 2025 Indianapolis Prize.

The Indianapolis Prize selects a group of renowned conservation experts, Indianapolis community leaders and Zoological Society representatives to serve on deliberation committees that independently determine Indianapolis Prize honorees—individuals who have pioneered and mastered approaches to animal species conservation, making victory for wildlife and wild places attainable.

The Indianapolis Prize celebrated the world’s preeminent animal conservationists at the Indianapolis Prize Gala on Sept. 30, 2023 at the JW Marriott in Downtown Indianapolis. Dr. Pablo Borboroglu, the 2023 awardee and ninth Winner of the Prize, received a $250,000 unrestricted grant.

Wildlife photographer and National Geographic Explorer Joel Sartore was named the 2023 Jane Alexander Global Wildlife Ambassador. Sartore is best known for his portrait photography of at-risk species seen through National Geographic’s Photo Ark project.

Nominations for the 2025 Indianapolis Prize opened on June 12, 2023 and will close on Feb. 26, 2024. The Winner will be awarded $250,000 and five Finalists will be awarded $50,000 each.

The Indianapolis Prize announced Pablo Borboroglu, Ph.D. as the 2023 Winner of the Indianapolis Prize. Borboroglu is an internationally recognized expert on penguin ecology and land and sea conservation.

The Indianapolis Prize announced Peruvian primatologist and anthropologist Fanny M. Cornejo the inaugural Winner of the Emerging Conservationist Award. The biennial Award recognizes conservationist under 40 years of age with the talent and drive to make a significant impact on saving animal species or group of species.

The Indianapolis Prize named six Finalists for the 2023 Indianapolis Prize Award. This biennial award provides the Winner with $250,000 and the remaining Finalists with $50,000.

Officials from the Indianapolis Prize named ten Finalists for the newly created Emerging Conservationist Award. The Winner will be awarded $50,000 to advance their work to protect species.

The Indianapolis Prize announced a major increase in the cash award for the Finalists of the Prize. The Finalists will now recieve $50,000 instead of $10,000. The elevation of the award will help support their work to protect and save species on a global scale.
