It’s a Boy!

A new male orangutan baby was born to mother, Sirih, and father, Basan, on Feb. 20, 2025. Sirih is an experienced mom, with offspring Mila, born here in 2016, and Jahe, born in Frankfurt, Germany in 2003.

Orangutans are born after a pregnancy of about 8 months. Offspring stay close to their mother for 8 years until they are sexually mature.  Our new orangutan has already met his dad, Basan, and big sister, Mila, and he will continue to meet other members of the orangutan troop in the coming weeks.

Learn more about the orangutan troop at the Zoo here—and experience them for yourselves by visiting The Simon Skjodt International Orangutan Center at the Zoo!
