Take Your Class for a Walk on the Wild Side

Learning Safaris

Take your class on a guided tour around the Zoo on this memorable add-on experience for your class field trip! Choose from one of two types of tours:

  • Learning Safari
  • Learning Safari: Animal Care Edition

Learning Safari

Your students will be wildlife explorers during this 45-minute guided tour. Led by a Zoo educator, Learning Safaris use the Zoo as a living laboratory, stopping at various animal habitats to observe wildlife and engage in student exploration activities. Choose from one of these Safari themes:

  • Wildlife Adaptation Safari
  • Zoo Habitat Safari
  • Animal Behavior Safari
  • Plant Safari
  • Chimpanzees and Other Primates
  • Zoo Exhibit Design

Learning Safaris are designed to meet academic standards for students in grades 3–7.  If you are looking for a Learning Safari for older or younger students, please contact us at [email protected] to discuss your needs.

When: Monday–Friday at 10am & noon

Cost: $10 per student. One chaperone (no cost) is required for every 10 students. Additional adults are $10 each. Cost does not include field trip admission. Minimum 10 participants, maximum 40 per session. You will be required to finalize the number of participants for this program 2 weeks in advance, as space is limited.

Payment: Program will be added on to your school’s invoice in addition to your field trip registration costs. Payment is encouraged to be completed at the time of registration. Schools with remaining balances will be invoiced after their scheduled field trip.

Learning Safari: Animal Care Edition

Your students will really roar about their field trip when it includes a behind-the-scenes tour to learn more about how the Zoo cares for animals! A Zoo educator will lead your group on a 45-minute visit to the Polly Horton Hix Animal Medical Center and the Zoo’s Commissary. You’ll see inside the Zoo’s working veterinary clinic and kitchens to hear stories of how Zoo staff care for many different animals every day.

Participants of this tour must be at least 6 years old.

When: Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 11am

Cost: $15 per person (all students, teachers, chaperones). One chaperone is required for every 10 students. Cost does not include field trip admission. Minimum 10 participants, maximum 40 per session. The final number of participants is required at the time of reservation, and reservations must be made 4 weeks in advance.

Payment: Program will be added on to your school’s invoice in addition to your field trip registration costs. Payment is encouraged to be completed at the time of registration. Schools with remaining balances will be invoiced after their scheduled field trip.
