Careers and Volunteers

There are many opportunities to get involved at the Indianapolis Zoo and White River Gardens. Featuring one of the premier Volunteer Programs in the United States with 600 Volunteers contributing 65,000 hours of service annually, the Indianapolis Zoo offers a wide variety of positions to peak your interest.
The Adult Volunteer Program has been serving the Zoo for nearly 30 years and the dedication and commitment that continues from this group of people is immeasurable. Individuals over the age of 18 can participate in a wide variety of assignments including education, special events, gardening, and animal care.
The Intern Program provides university students and graduates the rare opportunity to learn what it is really like to work for a world class zoological facility. Students in their junior or senior years, as well as recent graduates, can apply for one of three sessions: winter/spring, summer, and fall.
The Zoo Teen Program offers 125 volunteer positions for teenagers (age 14-18) who are interested in furthering their interests in animals and exploring career opportunities in zoo and aquarium sciences. The 2009 Program is filled.
For those interested in employment at the Zoo or Gardens, you can see what positions are available by clicking Employment in the left column of the screen. Understand that positions working with plants and animals require related education and previous experience. However, there are many other employment positions at the Zoo and Gardens, all of which work to support friendly guest service as well as the conservation and education efforts of the Indianapolis Zoo.
