What's Blooming Now - May 20, 2011
The Flowers of Late May

OrnamentalOnionWhat a great time to visit White River Gardens!  Our annual orders have arrived and planting has begun.   Both the Clowes Water Garden and Belvedere planters are complete.  We are excited to watch them fill in as summer approaches!

GazaniaOne of the annuals our visitors have noticed and asked about is planted in the raised bed of the Polly H. Hix Design Gardens (and soon to be at the Hilbert Conservatory re-entry walk).  Ganzania ‘Kiss Orange Flame’ is hard to miss with its bright orange daisy like flowers.  The flowers of Ganzania keep tightly closed in cloudy weather, but with sunny days, this flower is stunning and will make a statement in any sunny garden border.

False Blue IndigoWhile we wait for our annuals to fill in and make their ultimate impression, there are plenty of other plants throughout White River Gardens to keep any plant buff happy!

Blue StarThe week, the Virginia Fairbanks Sun Garden is most prolific in Blue False Indigo (Baptisia australis), Spiderwort (Tradescantia), and varieties of ornamental onions (Allium).  Other plants of interest in the Sun Garden are the Yellow Flag Iris (Iris pseudacorus) along the stream and Blue Star (Amsonia tabernaemontana).  You will see a nice stand of Blue Star at the Stream Pool planting.

Come and enjoy the late spring blooming at White River Gardens!
