The 33rd annual running of the Greatest Spectacle in
Tortoise Racing was one for the history books. The
2013 Zoopolis 500 presented by the American Dairy Association
came down to the wire with Marco pulling out the victory over Scott in the
closest race in Zoopolis 500 history!
Thanks to the special guests as well as the thousands of fans who made this
event so spectacular!
event is always a favorite with fans and is held annually the
Wednesday before the Indianapolis 500. The day includes lots of
family-friendly activities and features our radiated tortoises hustling to the
finish line to be the first to reach the abundant fruit platter.
The stars of the Indy Racing League, including IRL Chief Announcer Mike King
and past IRL IndyCar Series champ Tony Kanaan, join in the fun as our race
announcer and honorary steward. You can get an autograph from Kanaan before
he kicks off our
parade, which also includes 500 Festival Princesses, the Dairy Princess, the
American Dairy Association mascot Buttercup and our racing
tortoises. Following the parade, the green flag drops on our feature race,
and you can cheer on your favorite tortoise to the finish line. But these natives of Madagascar aren’t racing for a trophy.

As they race down the course, be sure to check out
their beautifully marked shells, which have star-patterned stripes radiating
from the center (hence their name). Because of these markings, radiated
tortoises are considered to be one of the world's most beautiful tortoises.

beautiful 500 Festival Princesses, peer inside a 500 Festival Pace Car and
get a hug from our animal mascots, who will be available for some fun photo
ops, so don’t forget your cameras!
Kids can also experience what it's like to be a real pit crew member in
the Pit Stop Challenge and check out some real tortoise artifacts.
Plus, enjoy the spoils of winner’s circle with Dean’s milk throughout the
morning, while supplies last.
After the race, you can
meet the winning tortoise and his “pit crew,” our very
own Zookeepers who can answer any tortoise-related questions and tell you
all about our efforts to help these endangered animals.
And the best
part is all of
the day’s activities are included with your regular Zoo admission!
